Search & Ranking

A SQL LIKE scan touches every row — unusable at billions of documents. An inverted index pre-builds a map of term → document IDs so each lookup is O(1). Ranking is intentionally separate: first retrieve all matching docs cheaply, then score and sort. Typeahead uses a trie — a different structure optimized for prefix matching, not full-word lookup.
